Sexual Harassment in VUCA’s Perspective

Triggered by our DPR’s refusal to approve RUU PKS, the topic sexual harassment is being such a big fuss to our environment lately. Many people been desperately substantiated this pre-constitution rights to uphold the justice for victims that’ve been through all traumas and harassment.

And how do we see this in VUCA’s perspective?

Firstly first, we need to understand what is VUCA.

VUCA stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. Broadly speaking, VUCA’s can be defined as a combination of qualities that taken together, and characterize the nature of some difficult conditions and situations.

And now let’s see how this sexual harassment issue can be elaborated by all four components of VUCA.

Volatility, the first aspect. Volatility is the quality of being subject to frequent, rapid and significant change. And for this issue, we can see that sexual harassment can happen to anyone, anywhere, and anytime.

The second one, uncertainty. Uncertainty is a component of that situation, in which events and outcomes are unpredictable. No one knows when will rapists do their outrageous action. Their reasons are also come in various type. It’s either triggered by childhood trauma, fetish, or simply their inability to hold back their lust. Some people assumed that sexual harassment can be triggered by the way peopleーspecifically womanーdress, but most of the surveys prove that it is not true because in fact, sexual harassment occurs a lot to those who dress modestly or even hijabi. That’s why the cause is still uncertain.

Next is complexity. Complexity involves a multiplicity of issues and factors, some of which may be intricately interconnected. As I already mentioned above, sexual harassment can also be triggered by childhood trauma. So the victims that’ve been harassed can do the same thing in future and it will be going continuously in circular way. The impacts will be even more complex if this vicious circle is not going to be stopped as soon as possible.

Last one, ambiguity. Ambiguity is manifested in a lack of clarity and the difficulty of understanding exactly what the situation is. This issue indeed comes in many different way of perspectives. That’s why not all people support the approval of RUU PKS. Not everyone understand what is the actual definition and specimen of sexual harassment. Some people think that sexual harassment is only a rape, when there’s actually a lot of behavior that can be considered as verbal abuse such as catcalling.

And that’s how I see it in the glasses of VUCA. I highkey hoping that this issue can be resolved ASAP and the victims can get their actual rights knowing that the laws that governing sexual harassment here is still very weak. The solution to this issue is to STOP blaming the victim and give severe punishment to the culprit.
